Chive is an easy-to-grow perennial herb. This chive variety, Biggy, is an unusual variety with broad leaves that have a very pleasant aroma and a mild onion flavour. The leaves work great in fresh salads, egg dishes, potato dishes, and more. They can also be stored frozen.
Chives prefer humus-rich chalky soils, preferably loamy soils, but it will grow in all soil types. Make sure not to let the herb bloom, since this takes energy from the general growth.
Pre-cultivation and direct sown
February - April
March - July
May - October
If you want to sow chives without pre-cultivating the seeds indoors, sow lots of seeds in groups, approximately 30 cm apart, as soon as the soil can be used.
Plant the herb by sowing several seeds in a pot and placing it in a cool and bright place. Keep the soil moist at all times by watering repeatedly. When the herb has sprouted, replant it outside.
