A traditional Finnish crop, often grown after the land has been scorched. The root is flat, round and purple in colour with a lighter underside, some may be other colours. Juicy and stringless flesh, don’t let the turnip get too big - 6-8 cm is just right. Sow in batches. Tasty raw or cooked. Thrives in most soils, preferably clay. Like all brassicas, needs plenty of fertiliser and water. Cover with a fibre cloth to protect from cabbage root fly.
